Not necessarily. Applicants who are Slovak residents, or who have a domicile or seat within the EU/EEA, can file directly with the ÚPV SR without appointing a representative.

Applicants based outside the EU/EEA are required to appoint an authorized representative, a Slovak attorney or patent attorney, to act before the office.

Even where representation is not mandatory, working with a professional is advisable for applicants unfamiliar with the process. Errors in the goods and services list, or failure to anticipate conflicts with earlier marks, are among the most common avoidable causes of delay or refusal.
