What information do you need from me to set up a trademark and will I only pay a one-time fee?

To file a trademark application, you don’t actually need extensive or complicated documentation. You need to provide your attorney with your brand name or logo, your personal or company details, and the goods and services to be covered. The legal team then prepares the application and a Power of Attorney for your review before filing.

The registration fee is not a one-time fee. The initial payment covers the application and the first 10-year registration period. But, after 10 years, a renewal fee is required to keep the trademark active. In the US, a Declaration of Use must also be filed between the 5th and 6th year after registration, which carries its own fee.

Additionally, if you encounter issues with the IP office during the initial registration period—if they issue an office action against your mark, or a previous owner opposes your mark, there are extra fees associated with resolving these conflicts.
