What is the purpose of a trademark?

The purpose of a trademark is twofold:

  • signalling a single source of goods and services to the consumer, and
  • protecting brands and their distinguishing characteristics from infringement, i.e. preventing other companies from using similar elements in their branding when offering similar goods and services.
