Can I test the competitors and potential opponents by simply registering the trademark in just one country to start with?

You can’t reliably test your competitors with a single-jurisdiction filing. No opposition in one country doesn’t equal no opposition in all countries. Different owners of similar marks exist in different jurisdictions, and the way they approach brand protection may differ drastically. A clean registration in the UK does not mean the same mark will pass without opposition in the US or EU.

If you’re on a lower budget, you should prioritize the markets where you are most commercially active or most at risk of a third party filing first. But treat each jurisdiction's examination and opposition as independent rather than using one as a proxy for the others.
