Like most major jurisdictions, Australia uses the Nice Classification system, with 45 classes. Classes 1–34 are reserved for goods, while Classes 35–45 are for services. IP Australia administers trademark registrations and provides a database of pre-approved goods and services terms.

Applicants who use pre-approved terms from IP Australia's database pay lower filing fees than those who use custom descriptions. If no pre-approved term accurately describes the goods or services, custom descriptions are permitted but are subject to higher fees and potentially more detailed examination.
