The US uses the Nice Classification system, with 45 classes; Classes 1–34 for goods and Classes 35–45 for services. The USPTO provides its own Acceptable Identification of Goods and Services Manual (ID Manual), which lists the specific terminology recognized for each class.

Using terminology from the ID Manual when drafting the goods and services list reduces the risk of receiving a formalities office action. Custom descriptions outside the ID Manual are accepted but may trigger an examiner request for clarification.
