Are trademark renewals guaranteed to go through?

For the most part, renewals are almost guaranteed, yes. They do not involve re-examination of the mark, and there is no opposition period; the process is administrative. Most rejections or complications arise from procedural issues rather than substantive grounds.

The main reasons for an unsuccessful renewal are missing the deadline and grace period entirely, which results in lapse rather than refusal; a concurrent non-use cancellation action filed by a third party; in the US, failure to submit the Declaration of Use; and administrative errors in the application itself.

If possible, file your renewal early and through a representative. It’s the most reliable way to ensure renewal proceeds without complication.
