Can I register a sound as an EU trademark?

Yes, sounds can be registered as EU trademarks. The mark must be represented in the application as an audio file; musical notation is also accepted where applicable.

As with all non-traditional marks, a sound trademark must be distinctive; it cannot be a purely functional sound or one that lacks the capacity to identify a single commercial source. Jingles, sonic logos, and distinctive audio signatures associated with a brand are the most common examples.
