Can I designate the EU through a WIPO international application?

Yes. The EU is a member of the Madrid System, which means applicants can designate the EU via the EUIPO as one of the territories in a WIPO international trademark application. A single international application can therefore include the EU alongside multiple other jurisdictions.

When the EU is designated, the EUIPO examines the application under the same rules that apply to direct EU filings. If the EUIPO raises objections or if third parties file oppositions, the standard EUIPO procedures apply.
