Would a similar brand pose a threat to my trademark registration if they aren't active in my field or even close?

Generally no, if the goods and services are sufficiently different. IP offices assess likelihood of confusion based on both the similarity of the marks and the relatedness of the goods and services. A mark in an unrelated field is unlikely to form a successful basis for opposition, since consumers encountering both marks in their respective industries would not reasonably confuse the two sources.

The one exception is highly well-known or famous marks, whose owners can in some jurisdictions oppose applications in unrelated classes if the new mark would unfairly exploit or dilute their reputation. This protection is limited to marks with genuinely broad consumer recognition.
