How does the number of trademark classes affect the registration fee?

In most jurisdictions, the base filing fee only applies to one class of goods and services. If you need multiple classes, each additional class incurs a separate government fee. The total cost scales with the number of classes you include.

The exact fees and how much they rise per class vary from country to country. Some IP offices use flat additional class fees (this is the case in the US), while others use stepped pricing where the second and third classes are charged differently from subsequent ones (this is the case in the EU). Filing in more classes always increases the registration cost; the practical question is whether the additional classes genuinely serve the business's needs.
