Can I only use the ® with the exact version of the name/logo that was registered, or can I use it with different versions?

The ® symbol should only be used with the specific version of the mark that is registered and appears on the registration certificate. Using it with a substantially different version of the mark; a modified logo, a different name variant, or a combined mark where only the name is registered; is not appropriate and can be misleading.

For versions of the mark that differ from the registered one, use ™ instead until a separate registration covering that version is obtained. Many brands register both a wordmark and a figurative mark, and use ® alongside each; but only because each has its own separate registration.
